Access and admission

An annual offer of 15 places is planned, between full-time and part-time students. Of the 15 places offered in each academic year, a maximum of 10 may be allocated to part-time students.

There will be 7 places offered by the ULL and 8 by the ULPGC, of which a minimum of 2 will be allocated part-time in La Laguna and 3 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, up to the maximum of 10 established, adjusting in each case based on the selection process, which is the responsibility of the Academic Committee of the program.

Each university will use the specific information systems it has available, which are the following procedures to provide basic and complementary information to future PhD students:

A. On the institutional website, through the links:

a. Studies > Doctorate > PhD Degrees. This link contains all the information on the doctorates that can be studied at the ULPGC.

b. ULPGC for you > PhDs, where you will find the link to the pre-registration page.

c. The following is available at ULL link, where you will find, among other information, the Regulations for Official Doctoral Studies at the University of La Laguna.

B. Through a press advertising campaign.

C. Through the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation and Cooperation of the ULPGC and the Internationalisation of the ULL, doctoral studies are disseminated to all the universities with which we have agreements.

The ULPGC Doctoral School carries out a Plan for the Promotion and Recruitment of Students for Postgraduate programmes in coordination with the Vice-Rectorate for Degrees and Doctorates and in accordance with the provisions of the School and Degree Quality Assurance System. The ULL Doctoral School provides equivalent promotion systems.

In addition to these systems, other means are planned to be used to publicize the access and registration procedures for this degree:

During the course, information sessions will be held for students of official master's degrees related to the degree, in which the characteristics of the degree, the lines of research, the admission profile and the requirements necessary to enroll will be explained. Likewise, it is planned to create a website for the doctorate itself. The program has acquired a website domain which will serve as a complement to the web pages set up by the two universities to disseminate the programme.

The Academic Committee will ensure that specific actions aimed at the international dissemination and promotion of the programme are promoted in order to encourage the participation of doctoral students of other nationalities. To this end, it will use the Vice-Rectorates responsible for Internationalisation and Cooperation, which disseminate the Doctoral studies to all the universities with which we have agreements. Likewise, the Doctoral School is committed to carrying out a Plan for the Promotion and Recruitment of Students for Postgraduate programmes in coordination with the competent Vice-Rectorates and in accordance with what is established in the Quality Assurance System. In this sense, the programme has been submitted to a call for proposals from the EDULPGC with the specific objective of promoting the programme, in which funding is requested for the production of a promotional video, hand-out brochures and help to improve the quality of the programme. Web page.

Admission profile

In accordance with the principle of universal accessibility, in general, all students who meet the requirements set forth in the general regulations governing the doctorate, both state (RD 99/2011 and related regulations) and those of the participating universities, will be able to access this program.

Recommended entry profile.

The doctoral programme is mainly oriented towards research in Geography, History and Archaeology, and is therefore open primarily to students from undergraduate, graduate and master's degrees in the Arts and Humanities branch, completed at any Spanish or foreign university.

Applicants must prove a B1 level in English.

The competent body to carry out the admission process is the Academic Committee, which will be made up of 9 members.

For access as a general rule it is established:

Since the ULPGC is the university responsible for the doctorate, the general regulations of the ULPGC will be followed for access and admission to official degrees, in accordance with the provisions of the Resolution of January 17, 2013 on the Regulations of Official Doctoral Studies of the ULL. The following are established as access requirements:

1. In general, hold an official Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and a Master's degree.

2. In addition, the Doctoral School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria agreed in a session held on January 30, 2014, to establish the access procedure for those who, in accordance with section 2 of article 6 of RD99/2011 of January 28, are in possession of an official Spanish university degree obtained in accordance with previous university regulations, that is, graduates, architects, engineers, diploma holders, technical architects and technical engineers (degrees that qualify for access to university Master's courses) and who have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in official university studies, of which at least 60 must be at Master's level..

In accordance with the above, It is up to each university, in accordance with its specific regulations, to determine both the equivalences between the LRU credits (specific to the previous degrees) and the ECTS credits, as well as the assessment criteria for the 60 ECTS credits that, at least, must be considered as Master's level credits, for the purposes of these graduates accessing doctoral studies. It is understood without prejudice to the fact that each university may establish additional requirements and criteria for admission to a specific Doctoral Program as well as, where appropriate, specific training complements, as set out in article 7 of the aforementioned Royal Decree..

Therefore, according to the EDULPGC, holders of official Spanish university degrees prior to those regulated by Royal Decree 1393/2007 of October 29, which establishes the organization of official university education, may access the doctoral programs regulated by RD99/2011 of January 28, with the following procedure:

1.- Candidates who meet the minimum requirements must request recognition of LRU credits for master's-level ECTS credits from the Doctoral School's Management Committee. The files of the selected candidates will be sent to the corresponding academic committees for them to issue their report with the proposal for credit recognition.

2.- Once the reports have been received, the Steering Committee of the Doctoral School will submit the recognition proposals together with the agreements with the academic managers necessary for the students to be able to meet the required conditions, for approval by the Doctoral Committee.

The following limits are generally established:

Limits of recognition

  • Graduates who have completed 300 LRU credits in their official university studies: Up to 28 ECTS credits at master's level.
  • Graduates who have completed more than 300 LRU credits in their official university studies: Up to 60 ECTS credits at master's level.

3. Those who are in possession of a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems, without the need for its homologation, after verification by the University that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and that it qualifies in the country issuing the degree for access to Doctoral studies. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous qualification held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than access to Doctoral studies.

4. Those who are in possession of another Spanish Doctorate degree obtained in accordance with previous university regulations.

The body responsible for carrying out the admission process is the Academic Committee. It has been established that the Academic Committee will be made up of 9 members. The coordinator of the doctoral programme must be from the ULPGC, and a professor from the ULL will take on the tasks of coordination with the other university. The committee will be formed with a minimum of one representative for each line of research and it will be ensured that the Committee respects a principle of representation that guarantees a balanced presence of people from the two universities that promote the programme. To this end, it is established that there must always be a minimum number of three members for each of the universities. There may also be up to two people of recognised prestige in the field of one of the research lines of the Programme outside the ULPGC and the ULL.
The admission criteria will be adjusted by default to those established in the ULPGC doctoral studies regulations.
The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will evaluate and prioritize applications based on the following criteria for assessing the candidates' merits for their final admission into the program:
1. Access qualification (weighted 50%), valued as follows: if the student holds a qualification of the recommended profile, 25 points; if the student corresponds to additional profile 2, he/she will have 20 points; and if the student is included in additional profile 3, he/she will obtain 15 points.

Students who meet the recommended admission profile will not require additional training. Depending on the candidate's previous training and the curricular content of the program, additional training may be established to facilitate better development of the thesis project.
