Internships allow you to apply the knowledge you've acquired during your academic studies, connecting you with the professional world and improving your employability. You can do them at the university itself or at collaborating institutions, both in Spain and abroad.

Requirements

Be enrolled in a degree program at the ULL or an affiliated center.

In the case of curricular internships, be enrolled in the corresponding subject.

Not having completed all the credits in your study plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.- What types of internships can I take?

The internships may be carried out in the following ways, as established by ULL regulations:

  1. Curricular, when they are configured as academic activities that are part of the curriculum that the students are taking, and the students must necessarily be enrolled in the subject(s) at the time of their completion.
  2. Extracurricular internships are those that students may undertake voluntarily during their training period and which, although having the same purposes as curricular internships, are not part of the corresponding curriculum. They may be eligible for academic recognition under the conditions set forth in Article 33 of the External Internship Regulations of the University of La Laguna. (Only those completed in accordance with the teaching guides for the subjects to be recognized will be recognized.) Extracurricular internships without a scholarship or study grant may be taken if curricular internships have not previously been passed. The same time limit is assigned to the curricular external internship subject(s) in the verification report of the corresponding degree.

Before the internship begins, the student's annex to the educational cooperation agreement for external internships must be formalized, which must be signed by the university and the collaborating entity.

2.- What general requirements must I meet?

The following may carry out the external internships:

  1. Students enrolled in degrees taught by the ULL or its affiliated centers.
  2. Students from other Spanish or foreign universities who, by virtue of academic mobility programs or agreements established between them, are studying at the ULL or affiliated centers.

These students will enjoy the same treatment as established in these regulations for ULL students, unless the regulations governing these programs provide otherwise.

The following will not be able to carry out the practices:

  1. Students who have exceeded the course load for the corresponding degree will not be eligible to participate in any of the various internship programs.
  2. In the case of extracurricular internships, these will be interrupted once the student has earned all the credits that will allow him or her to process his or her degree.

3.- At what point during my degree will I be able to do an internship?

In official undergraduate programs, students may enroll in the internship course when they meet the requirements established in their degree verification report.

Failing this, the school board may agree on the criteria it deems appropriate. This information must be made available to students by the school where the corresponding degree is being offered.

4.- Are there any restrictions on doing internships at partner organizations?

It will be a requirement for the award of a place that the student does not have a contractual relationship with the collaborating entity.

Likewise, efforts will be made to ensure that students do not undertake internships at a collaborating entity whose owners or management positions are related by blood or marriage up to the third degree.

The situations described in the preceding paragraphs may be accepted by the Internship Committee if it is deemed not to pose an impediment to the proper development of the training program.

5.- How long are the internships?

  1. The duration of the curricular internships will be as established by the internship course(s) in the curriculum. The internship credit is equivalent to 25 hours of student activity. The credit must take into account all the activities the student must perform to acquire the competencies assigned to this training activity in this subject: the time spent at the center, the time the student spends at the internship location, and the time spent preparing for the internship, under the supervision of an academic tutor, and the preparation of reports. The course's teaching guide will specify the time to be allocated to each activity.
  2. Extracurricular internships without a scholarship or study grant may be taken if the curricular internship has not been previously completed. The same time limit is assigned to the curricular internship subject(s) in the corresponding degree verification report. In the case of external internships with a scholarship or study grant, no time limit is set.

In both cases, the internship schedule will be determined by the characteristics of the internship and the availability of the collaborating entity. The schedule may not exceed 7 hours per day or 35 hours per week, except in exceptional cases provided for in the regulations.

6.- ¿I will have to be registered with Social Security to do the internship.?

  1. External internships with study assistance (paid internships).
    Students who have study assistance in their practices, as established in article 1 of the RD 1493/2011 (BOE of October 27)), are included in the General Social Security Regime. These curricular internships have a 100 % bonus on contributions, so the company does not contribute for them, but must register them, in accordance with the provisions of the twenty-fifth additional provision of the Royal Decree Law 8/2014, of July 4 (Official State Gazette of July 5)). 
  2. External internships without study assistance (unpaid internships).
    Students who carry out external internships without a scholarship or financial aid will also be included in the General Social Security Regime, in application of the provisions of the fifty-second additional provision of the Royal Legislative Decree 8/2015, of October 30, which approves the revised text of the General Social Security Law (Official State Gazette of October 31), which includes internships carried out by university students, both those aimed at obtaining official bachelor's and master's degrees, doctorates, and those aimed at obtaining a university-specific degree, whether a continuing education master's degree, a specialization diploma, or an expert diploma.

In both cases (internships with and without a scholarship), the protective action will be that corresponding to the applicable Social Security system, excluding unemployment benefits, coverage from the Wage Guarantee Fund, and vocational training. In the case of unpaid internships, protection from temporary disability benefits arising from common contingencies will also be excluded.

7.- ¿How do I obtain my Social Security Affiliation Number??

Students enrolled in an internship must have a Social Security Number (NUSS) at the beginning of the academic year. To do so, they must apply through the platform. online of the General Treasury of Social Security (TGSS). It will be issued immediately upon submission of the application.  

Do not confuse with the beneficiary number corresponding to the parent's Health Card.

To enter the platform online of the TGSS it is necessary that the student has a digital signature. If he does not have one he must obtain it by accessing the National Mint and Stamp Factory (FNMT) and following the steps indicated therein. 

8.- ¿What procedures do I have to follow to register with Social Security when I start my internship??

  1. Once you have the NUSS, you must include it in your academic record through the institutional website, in the Services Portal icon, following the following path: Students / My personal data / Modify / Basic data / Social security number.
  2. He day before the start date of the internshipYou must verify that you are registered with the corresponding Social Security System. This verification can be done on the TGSS website by requesting the report called "Your Employment History Report" or "Current Employee Situation Report." Using one of these reports, you can verify your registration with the General Social Security System. If you are not registered, you should immediately contact the person responsible for coordinating the internship or the center's secretary to resolve any issues.

9.- ¿I will have other insurance coverage?

Students on external internships may benefit from the following insurance policies, depending on the case.

  1. By accident.
    In the event of an accident, students under 28 years of age will be covered by mandatory school insurance, under the terms and conditions established by current legislation.
    For students who have turned 28 by the time of enrollment, the ULL offers accident insurance.
  2. For civil liability.
    All enrolled ULL students are covered by civil liability insurance subscribed by the University.
  3. Internships abroad.
    Students completing internships abroad must individually purchase insurance that covers all coverage not included in the mandatory student insurance or in the policies issued by the ULL. In this case, students must provide a copy of the aforementioned policy to their school's Secretary's Office before the internship begins.

This insurance coverage is independent of the benefits derived from the registration of the student intern in the Social Security System, whose accident protocol is described in the following question. 

10.- What should I do if I have an accident during my internship or while traveling?

If you are a student doing an internship and the University of La Laguna is responsible for your Social Security contributions (and not the collaborating company), in case of an accident you must follow the steps indicated in this document. protocol.

11.- Will I need any special documents if I do an internship with the Canary Islands Health Service?

All students of this university who do internships in the centers dependent on the Canary Islands Health Service need a identification cardfor which you should proceed following this procedure:

  1. Have a digital certificate or a Permanent key to access the administration's electronic services. The following links explain how to obtain the digital certificate or a Permanent key.
  2. Once the digital certificate or the Permanent key you must request it identification card on the electronic headquarters of the Government of the Canary IslandsThis procedure is open year-round. You must attach the documentation indicated in the application.
  3. Once the ID cards have been issued, the Canary Islands Health Service will send them to the corresponding faculty's secretary, who will then distribute them to the applicants. This ID card is valid for one academic year.

Once the internship period is over, students must return their ID card to the corresponding faculty secretary.

12.- ¿And if my practices require being in contact with minors?

In this case, article 57.1 of Organic Law 8/2021 of June 4, on comprehensive protection of children and adolescents against violence, will apply, which establishes that “ It will be a requirement for access to and exercise of any professions, trades, and activities that involve regular contact with minors, not to have been convicted by a final judgment for any crime against sexual freedom and indemnity classified in Title VIII of Organic Law 10/1995, of November 23, of the Penal Code, as well as for any crime of human trafficking classified in Title VII bis of the Penal Code. To this end, anyone seeking access to such professions, trades, or activities must prove this circumstance by providing a negative certification from the Central Registry of Sex Offenders.

To prove this, students who will be completing internships that involve regular contact with minors must submit a negative certificate from the sex offender registry to the University. Students who fail to submit this certificate in accordance with the procedure established by their degree program will not be eligible to participate in internships that involve regular contact with minors.
