The study of history provides a critical understanding of humanity's past, which allows us to understand the present and make it comprehensible to others. It contributes to generating an appreciation for the past and its historical, cultural, artistic, and archaeological heritage, also serving to recognize the diversity of cultures and civilizations, thus fostering respect for the values and cultural traditions of others and the development of civic awareness. Additionally, it provides a basic understanding of the methods, techniques, and analytical tools appropriate for historians. The acquisition of this body of knowledge and skills guides graduates of this degree toward professional employment in archaeological surveys, excavations, and studies, historical research, work in museums, archives, libraries, and documentation centers, historical heritage management, history teaching, and cultural consulting in the public and private sectors.
Considering the characteristics and objectives of these studies, it would be desirable for future students to possess the following qualities: a clear vocational training perspective in the field of historical knowledge, a concern for their cultural environment, and a capacity for observation, analysis, and fluent oral and written expression.
In short, future students of the History degree should show interest in the past and the evolution of humanity, in the dynamics of today's society, in politics and international relations, in enhancing their capacity for observation, analysis and explanation of historical events as well as changing reality, in enhancing their command of both oral and written language, as well as having knowledge of other languages (preferably English).
Graduates in History will be able to analyze, compare, and understand the past and, therefore, the present, and thus be prepared for professional careers in fields such as teaching, historical research, work in archives and historical libraries, management of historical documentation, collaboration with media and publishing, cultural consulting in various types of institutions, and, more generally, international project management and administrative work.
The professional activities for which the History degree qualifies are the following:
