Degree in Mathematics

Support and guidance

Each academic year, ULL centres implement the Guidance and Tutorial Action Plans (POAT) to be developed in their degrees to provide students with support and guidance systems once they have enrolled.

The training activities included in the POAT address various topics through which it is intended to facilitate the students' academic-professional decision-making at their different stages (reception and integration into the centre and the university, guidance throughout the degree and for their incorporation into the labour market), which will allow them to successfully complete the degree and adapt to new demands: autonomous learning strategies, teamwork, improving academic performance results, resolving difficulties, information and advice on external internships and final degree project, guidance on existing mobility programmes, demands and characteristics of the labour market, etc.

By being enrolled at ULL, students of the degree can participate in the POAT of their center, benefiting from:

The dissemination of the studies of the Degree in Mathematics of the University of La Laguna among potential new students is carried out through the different channels and mechanisms available to the university and the faculty:

  • Website of the University of La Laguna
  • Portal Live the ULL
  • Information and Guidance Service SIO which pays special attention to future and new students.
  • Open House Days
  • Website for the Degree in Mathematics: provides information on the characteristics of the courses taught, the curriculum, the teaching guides for the subjects, class schedules, exam sessions and other information of interest to students.

In addition, the Mathematics Section of the Faculty of Sciences has been developing a series of activities on an annual basis to disseminate various aspects of the studies and the profession, among which the following stand out:

  • The Mathematical Week with Mathematics outreach activities attended and participated by secondary and high school students from centres throughout the Canary Islands Autonomous Community.
  • Preparatory Course for University Mathematics: Aimed at new students in all degrees of the Faculty of Sciences, Degree in Pharmacy and Degrees in Engineering. This course is organized by the Mathematics Section. Pre-registration and enrollment is carried out at the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna.
  • Visit to secondary and high school centres: Faculty teachers visit non-university education centres to inform students, teachers and guidance staff about the training offered by the Mathematics Section.
  • Mathematical Experience: aimed at high school students at the end of the school year, it consists of a programme of talks and workshops over three to five days.

Among other activities, the following stand out:

  • Welcome days to new students, with presentations of the different services available to them: use of the library, computer rooms, Wi-Fi access, administrative management, scholarships, interdisciplinary training... and a visit to the facilities of the Mathematics Section.
  • Personalized Tutoring Program: Since 2004, Mathematics has had a Personalised Tutoring Programme in place for all its training programmes, and in particular since 2010 for the Degree in Mathematics, through which each student has a teacher-tutor in charge of their personal follow-up, advising them on both academic matters (organisation of study time, number of credits to be enrolled, exam sessions, etc.) and non-academic matters (personal situations, unforeseen difficulties, etc.). This tutor staff facilitates the configuration of elective itineraries that are consistent with the various professional profiles for which the Degree in Mathematics studies train: academic (teaching and research), technical (industry, IT and telecommunications) and social (finance and consultancy).

Students will receive guidance based on the topic in question:

  • Mobility programs: the teaching staff responsible for the national programme and the international programme inform and guide students about the signed agreements, procedures for applying for a place, scholarship applications, etc.
  • Internships: The Internship Committee has, among other objectives, the development of guidance actions for students regarding external internships integrated into the study plan.
  • Master's and PhD: The person responsible for the master's degree provides information on the postgraduate and doctoral studies to which the Degree in Mathematics gives access.
  • Career opportunities: Throughout the year, various activities such as talks or round tables are held, aimed at final-year students, with possible professional opportunities.

Furthermore, all students at the University of La Laguna can use the services of two specialized advisory services:

  • Psychopedagogical Counseling: aims to help those who have difficulties, both in the decision-making process and in the learning process. In addition, it provides data and reports to the information area and offers personalized attention to students.
  • The Legal Advice offers free individualized attention for any legal query related to your stay at the University, whether or not it is of an academic nature.
