The Tutorial Action Plan for the La Laguna Medicine Degree program has as its main objective the integration of students entering their first year of the degree. An important aspect to take into consideration, and common to all new students, is that, coming from different educational centers where classmates, rules, and ways of living together are different, it is understandable that they may initially feel lost in the face of such a radical change. Here, we highlight the role of the Tutor. Their role should be aimed at helping newly admitted students gradually integrate into the university environment. The Tutor must ensure that students acquire a sufficient degree of autonomy so that medical students can develop their work independently in the labor market.
In our integration efforts, we are very mindful of students with disabilities. They will have their own tutor with the same privileges as any other student, albeit with some exceptions necessary for their full adaptation. This Faculty has rehabilitated all areas that were previously inaccessible to disabled students and is adapting other areas. While not directly under the control of this Section of the Faculty, appropriate steps are being taken to ensure that the infrastructure does not represent an architectural barrier.
On the day of your welcome to the center, you will be introduced to the Management Team. Then, on subsequent days, you will be shown the locations of the different areas of interest, the practice areas, the seminar areas, the laboratories, and the various hospital meeting points.
Among the functions of a Tutor are General Guidance:
- The Tutorial Action Plan will be in effect throughout the entire course, therefore the Tutor-student relationship will last throughout this period of time.
- For the preparation of POAT group lists, the Class Representative will be responsible for collecting student information: full name and institutional email address. This information will be submitted to the POAT Directorate to create the different groups and their corresponding tutors. The list will later be published on the Faculty website. POAT Tutoring sessions are separate from teaching sessions, which are assigned to each professor according to their subject.
- Information from the different Departments and Meeting Points, especially with a view to the (HUC) University Hospital of the Canary Islands
- Explain the purpose of informed consent and its legal implications. E) Point out the need to have a ULL Student ID card and inform them that presenting it, in addition to being an entry and identification document at the University, also offers several advantages: discounts on public transportation, admission to cinemas, etc. Emphasize the use of the institutional email address.
- Please note that using the University's website, and specifically the Faculty's, offers advantages such as access to classes. Some professors are just beginning to teach online, and access to classes and slides is provided. You can also receive exam grades and information about scholarships and courses or events related to teaching and recreation.
- Teach him how to study and help him especially with problematic subjects.
- If necessary, contact the course coordinator to identify weaknesses in certain subjects. During each contact, students will note the date and time of the interview, as well as the topic discussed.
- The tutor can advise the POAT student, when appropriate, to contact the Mobility faculty to apply for an ERASMUS or the grants they may qualify for.
- For the Final Degree Project (TFG), the tutor can be the director, or the student can freely choose another supervisor. In this case, the tutor will provide support to both if necessary.
- In the rare case that there is no empathy in the relationship between both, the student must contact the Director of the POAT.
- The tutor will calculate the credit limit by comparing the number of visits recorded in the notebook requested at the beginning, corresponding to the tutoring sessions. The tutor will then request the relevant certificate from the POAT Director. This certificate will be signed by the tutor, the POAT Director, and the Faculty Administrator, along with the Faculty's seal. The POAT Director reserves the right to verify whether the student's request corresponds to reality.
Disabled students:
- They will be treated from a personal point of view like any other student.
- If your disability is not visible, it will only be known to the Guardian, who is subject to the legal premise of confidentiality and, in our case as Doctors, even more so, to Professional Secrecy.
- In the Parking lot, the designated space reserved for disabled guests must be respected. Otherwise, the Faculty Security Service will be responsible for any violations of this space, and they must immediately take appropriate measures to vacate it.
- If students are unable to attend a class due to infrastructure, the teacher or tutor must address the issue to the best of their ability. However, it is imperative that the governing board be informed.
- If the student's disability prevents him/her from taking notes, the teacher will be responsible for providing the notes or slides. If not, the tutor will be responsible for obtaining them, after contacting the Subject Coordinating Staff or the teacher who is teaching the classes.
For the implementation of the POAT at the centers and their degree programs, the necessary structures have been established: a POAT Coordinator, a faculty-tutor body, and, where appropriate, a Guidance and Tutoring Committee (or any other committee that assumes its functions) to ensure that students have support and guidance systems once enrolled in ULL degree programs.
Once a new student enrolls in the program, they are assigned a tutor who will support them throughout their academic and training journey, and they are given access to a dedicated virtual classroom.
Below is the contact information for the POAT Coordinating Staff and the center's tutor-teacher:
In addition to the existing structures at the center level, the ULL has an Information and Guidance Service (SIO) designed to inform, advise, and guide prospective students and the university community in general. The SIO has three distinct areas: an information area (scholarships and grants, university training proposals, procedures, rights and responsibilities, deadlines and procedures, etc.), a Psychopedagogical Counseling Department, and a Legal Counseling Department.
