Medical degrees and professional practice are strictly regulated at the European and Spanish levels. The existence of a national directive and regulation determines common objectives and content across all European Union countries.
Additionally, the regulations themselves stipulate a mandatory period of practical training for all physicians after graduation. In Spain, this postgraduate healthcare training is covered by the MIR (Medical Intern/Resident) system, which formalizes the specialization. Since the effective practice of medicine, at least in the public sector, will be linked to this postgraduate training, the general focus of the degree and the graduate profile contemplate general technical and learning skills that enable access to postgraduate training with the maximum guarantee of achievement, as well as the intellectual, social, and human background that the practice of medicine demands. In other words, the skills at graduation must be adequate for accessing and progressing in the MIR specialization system.
