Internships in companies, organizations, and institutions are mandatory for official undergraduate degrees taught at the University of La Laguna and provide students with exposure to real-life situations, complementing their training with the reality of the working world.
They constitute a formative activity, carried out by university students and supervised by universities. Their objective is to enable students to apply and complement the knowledge acquired in their academic training, promoting the acquisition of skills that prepare them for professional activities, facilitating their employability, and fostering their entrepreneurial capacity.
Academic internships may be carried out in collaborating entities/companies, such as companies, institutions, public/private entities, etc.
However, in the Degree in Medicine there are no external internships properly understood as such, instead the study plan contemplates the realization of clinical practices included and integrated into the mandatory credits of the degree subjects, in addition to the "Supervised Internships" corresponding to the Rotary in the final year of the degree, which is entirely devoted to clinical practice.
Clinical practices are carried out in University Hospitals (University Hospital of the Canary Islands; University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria) and in the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) CAE (Centers for the Study of Undergraduate Studies) within the framework of the University-Canary Islands Health Service agreements for the teaching use of public hospitals and healthcare entities.
General requirements for carrying out Supervised Internships (Rotations)
To complete supervised internships (rotations), students must meet the requirements established in the teaching guides for each rotation subject, as well as any other general academic requirements established by the degree in its Verification/Modification Report, if applicable.
The Coordinator of each degree course is responsible for agreeing with the subject coordinators and those responsible for each center on the number of students admitted, the timing, and the activities to be carried out by the students.
The center and its affiliated degrees have structures and mechanisms for organizing, managing, evaluating, and monitoring clinical internships/rotations. These are specifically designed for: the Head of Studies, Course Coordinators, and Subject Coordinators who organize clinical internships at the various university hospitals and specialized care centers of the Canary Islands Health Service, with which agreements exist.
At the end of the rotational internship period, sixth-year students undergo an objective and structured clinical evaluation (OSCE), designed in parallel with the rest of Spain's medical schools, through the National Conference of Deans of Medicine.
