General information

The Degree in Nautical Studies and Maritime Transport qualifies for the professional title of Nautical Officer (2nd Class Pilot of the Merchant Navy), a title regulated nationally and internationally by the International Maritime Organization in its STCW code in the Nautical section A-II/2.

Once the student has graduated in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport, he or she will have direct access to the Master's Degree linked to the Profession of Merchant Marine Captain (Annex V Resolution of the University Council, January 20, 2016), implemented in 2021.

There are no specific entrance tests, however, it is necessary (to practice the profession) to pass a medical examination (see articles 5 to 19 of RD 973/2009, of June 12 - BOE July 2).

The Bachelor's Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport is included in the Engineering and Architecture Branch of University Studies, and is therefore primarily designed to accommodate graduates of the Baccalaureate in Science and Technology, as well as those enrolled in the corresponding Higher Vocational Training Courses related to the degree.

Academic title + 12 months of embarkation + proof of suitability for obtaining the professional title of the Merchant Navy will allow you to practice:

  • Second or first officer pilot of the merchant navy on merchant ships with limited power.
  • Upon completion of the "Master's Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport Management": Obtaining the professional title of Merchant Navy Captain (+24 months) or First Officer (+12 months) on merchant vessels with a gross tonnage equal to or greater than 3,000.
  • Professionally carry out all activities related to their maritime profession.
