Support and guidance

Each academic year, ULL centers implement Guidance and Tutorial Action Plans (POAT) for their degree programs to provide students with support and guidance systems once they enroll.

The training activities included in the POAT address various topics that aim to facilitate students' academic and professional decision-making at different stages (welcome and integration into the center and the university, guidance throughout the degree and for their incorporation into the labor market), which will allow them to successfully complete the degree and adapt to new demands: autonomous learning strategies, teamwork, improvement of academic performance results, resolution of difficulties, information and advice on external internships and final degree projects, guidance on existing mobility programs, demands and characteristics of the labor market, etc.

By enrolling at the ULL, students of the degree can participate in their center's POAT, benefiting from:

  • The training and information activities provided throughout the degree.
  • Advice from a tutor-teacher, who will support you in your intellectual, academic, and professional pursuits.
  • Its recognition in ECTS credits – 1 per academic year – as stated in the Regulations for the Recognition of Credits for Participation in University Activities in Official Undergraduate Studies.

The University of La Laguna also has the Information and Guidance Service, to inform, advise and guide future students and the university community in general, and with the Program for Students with Specific Educational Support Needs (PAED), to analyze and respond to the demands of students with disabilities (visual, hearing, physical and mental) and/or specific educational support needs (NEAE).

For the implementation of the POAT at the centers and their degree programs, the necessary structures have been established: POAT Coordinating Staff, a teaching-tutor body, and, where appropriate, a Guidance and Tutoring Committee (or any other committee that assumes its functions) to ensure that students have support and guidance systems once enrolled in ULL degree programs.

Once new students enroll in the program, they are assigned a tutor who will support them throughout their academic and training journey. The time slot for these activities is typically determined by the school's approved schedule. Activities may be targeted at a single academic year, several academic years within the same program, or several programs combined.

In addition to the existing structures at the center level, the ULL has an Information and Guidance Service (SIO) designed to inform, advise, and guide prospective students and the university community in general. The SIO has three distinct areas: an information area (scholarships and grants, university training proposals, procedures, rights and responsibilities, deadlines and procedures, etc.), a Psychopedagogical Counseling Department, and a Legal Counseling Department.

The Faculty's POAT organization focuses on career mentoring and training and complementary activities, under the supervision of the POAT coordinating staff, the coordinating staff of each degree program, and the Dean.

Career or academic pathway tutoring could be defined as the work performed by a professor who focuses on the comprehensive development of a small group of students throughout their studies. Tutoring is planned and adapted each year according to a specific plan developed for each degree program at the center and is aimed at students from the beginning of their studies until they complete them.

Students enrolled in degree programs taught at the Faculty must be assigned a tutor at the beginning of each academic year. The POAT coordinator for each degree program will prepare, in coordination with the Dean, the annual and quarterly academic tutoring schedule. Each student will be assigned a tutor and will be notified at the beginning of each academic year. A list of the students being tutored, the tutoring faculty, and their respective tutoring schedules will be published.

Regarding training and complementary activities, they address the needs of students related to their training project and are developed in the following specific areas:

  • Integration and adaptation to the university environment
  • Learning processes and independent work strategies.
  • Knowledge and access to information sources.
  • Information and guidance for professional integration.
  • Professional transition.

Typically, the time slot for these activities will be determined by the school's approved schedules. Activities may be carried out for a single course, several courses within the same degree, or several degrees combined.
