Degree in Chemistry

Final Degree Project

The Final Degree Project (TFG) is a 15-credit subject in which students must independently, under the supervision of the teaching staff, complete a project, report or study in which they demonstrate that they have acquired the skills required for the degree.
The TFG may be a technical project, a theoretical, empirical or experimental work, of a professional or innovative nature or application that may be carried out, totally or partially, at the University of La Laguna, or in other universities, institutions or companies, provided that there is a corresponding educational collaboration or cooperation agreement.

Students may enroll in the TFG once they have passed 162 credits of basic and compulsory subjects, and have enrolled in all the basic and compulsory credits they have left to complete, as well as external internships.
Once enrolled, students will have the right to take the TFG exam in the sessions established for subjects with the same duration, provided that at the time of submitting the work they have passed all the basic and compulsory subjects and external internships.
Students, provided they meet the established requirements, may make use of the extraordinary end-of-degree call, in which, to facilitate the completion of studies, it will not be necessary for students to have been previously enrolled in the TFG.

The TFG will be carried out under the supervision of a maximum of two tutors. At least one of these people must belong to the teaching staff assigned to the areas of knowledge of Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry), including those who have a Marie Curie, Ramón y Cajal, Juan de la Cierva, Viera y Clavijo, Beatriz Galindo post-doctoral contract or equivalent in these areas and who preferably teach in the degree.
The role of the tutor will be to set the specific topic of the work being supervised, to explain the characteristics of the TFG, to guide and supervise the preparation of the work, to ensure compliance with the established objectives, to issue an evaluation of the supervised TFG, as well as to guide and advise the students in the public presentation.
Research staff contractually linked to the University of La Laguna may co-supervise up to a maximum of two new TFGs for the Degree in Chemistry per academic year. In the event that said staff are PhD students, the tutoring must be shared or authorized by one of their thesis supervisors.

The face-to-face activities of the TFG subject will consist mainly of tutorials, although other training activities of different types may be contemplated (seminars, workshops, etc.) aimed at guiding students on the structure of the work, the methodology, the treatment of the topics, the bibliography and its correct presentation.

In the TFG teaching guide, in addition to the aspects contained in all the subjects, you can find:

  • Relevant aspects of the organization and development of the subject: dates related to the TFG assignment process, evaluation systems and criteria, etc.
  • Criteria for granting the “honours degree” mention among students proposed by the courts.
  • Style, format and procedure for presenting the TFG report.
  • Documents accepted to prove the B1 language level required to defend the TFG.
  • Format of the public presentation of the TFG.

Students may choose one of the following options:

  1. TFG by prior agreement: Within the period established by the TFG Committee, students and teachers may agree on the tutoring of a specific TFG
  2. TFG chosen from the offer: Students who have not signed a TFG by prior agreement must request the assignment of a TFG by submitting a prioritized list of the TFG topics offered by the center. The assignment will be made based on the average grade of the subjects of the first three years (in the case of subjects not passed, the highest grade obtained will be taken into account). In the case of students who have not taken subjects in the third year because they have participated in mobility programs and there are no equivalent subjects at the host university, the grades for these subjects will not be counted when obtaining the average grade.

If the student does not pass the subject in that academic year and registers for the following academic year, it will not be necessary to renew the TFG award, unless the student or the teaching staff who supervises him/her requests the change. The award will be valid for two consecutive academic years, unless the student or the teaching staff request a new award.

The presentation and defense of the TFG can only be carried out if the student:

  1. has passed the external internships and the basic and compulsory subjects.
  2. has accredited knowledge of English as a foreign language, and must prove level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Accreditation can be carried out by:

  • the presentation of any of the documents required for access to the ULL Master's degrees: Recognized documents. The accreditation date must be:
    • B1: after January 1st of the year of commencement of studies for the Degree in Chemistry
    • B2: after January 1 of the year prior to the start of studies
    • C1: No date requirements
  • The realization of a level tests  at the ULL Language Service.

The TFG will be processed according to the instructions included in the teaching guide for the subject, which in any case will include the submission of a copy of the TFG Report in electronic format (pdf). The report must comply with the style, format and presentation rules included in the teaching guide for the subject.

In order to carry out the evaluation with guarantees of homogeneity, the TFG Committee will establish evaluation rubrics with indicators referring to those aspects that are considered susceptible to evaluation, such as structure, content, oral presentation, defense, etc. This protocol must be followed by the people in charge of evaluating the TFG and will be available in the TFG virtual classroom.

The evaluation of the TFG will be carried out taking into account the criteria included in the teaching guide for this subject, which is divided into:

  • the assessment of the skills achieved (40 %) and the report (20 %) that must be carried out by the people in charge of tutoring through the Tutors' Rubric
  • the evaluation of the presentation (20 %) and the defense (20 %) that will be carried out by a court using the Court's signature

Both the tutors' and the tribunal's rubrics must be approved by the TFG Committee.

The TFG must be presented and defended publicly and in person before a tribunal. The TFG Committee may authorize the online defense as long as the conditions require it. The defense of the TFG will consist of an oral presentation of its content or the main lines of it, for a period of 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, the student will answer the questions raised by the tribunal for a maximum of 10 minutes.

The TFG will not be eligible for approval through compensation nor may it be subject to adaptation or recognition.
