General information

Sociology analyzes the social reality of different social groups, social institutions, and social processes such as the family, youth, the elderly, migration, and the incorporation of women into the workforce. It studies social facts (what is society like?) and social perceptions (how is society perceived?), providing diagnoses and proposals for improvement. To do so, it utilizes techniques developed by sociology, both quantitative (surveys or demographic techniques) and qualitative (focus groups, in-depth interviews, or participant observation).

The degree in Sociology aims to train professionals capable of developing the theoretical and empirical foundations that enable scientific understanding of societies and their well-being. This involves fostering and developing the capacity to explain the social world around us and contributing to the improvement of the social model.

It is important and recommended that prospective students have an interest in the social sciences. Regarding the admissions profile, it is recommended that students possess the knowledge required by a high school student or equivalent, especially in mathematics, as well as an orientation and interest in the analysis of contemporary societies, social problems, and the appropriate techniques and methods for their study. It is also considered necessary for new students to have a basic level of English.

Sociology professionals today practice in a wide variety of fields and institutions, from the most traditional, such as public opinion research, social integration issues, and socialization processes, to newer ones, such as social policy evaluation, local development, human resource management, and development cooperation. Some of these fields include:

  • Advice and consulting in public bodies.
  • Processes of social and cultural revitalization.
  • Evaluation of social policies and social and community intervention projects.
  • Advertising, marketing and market research.
  • Human resources and work organization.
  • Applied social research.
  • Research and teaching.
  • Management of social programs.
  • Social intervention.
  • Public administrations.
