If you’re planning to study at ULL (Universidad de La Laguna) as an incoming Erasmus+ student, please contact your home university and follow their instructions to be officially nominated as an Erasmus+ student at the ULL.
Bilateral agreement and nomination
Only students who have been nominated by their home institution can be admitted. The nomination must be in line with an existing agreement between the two universities for the student’s level and field of study.
Language Requirements
Spanish is the common language of instruction at ULL, and all of our university services are largely provided in Spanish. For this reason, all international students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish.
- Minimum Spanish level required: B1 CEFR
- Certificates accepted: DELE / SIELE / certificates issued by your home university
- International students without an accepted Spanish certificate will be required to complete a free 30-hour online course offered by ULL.
Criminal Record Certificate
Students enrolling in the following fields of study must provide a Criminal Record Certificate:
- Medicine
- Nursing
- Physiotherapy
- Practicum courses in Education
Duration of Stay
The period of mobility must be as specified in the bilateral agreement. All students nominated for Medicine must apply for the full academic year.
Insurance
International students must provide evidence of insurance covering at least the following:
- travel insurance (including damage to or loss of luggage)
- public liability insurance (including professional liability where applicable)
- accident and critical illness insurance (including temporary or permanent disability)
- death insurance (including repatriation).
Applications will be cancelled if students do not have insurance coverage by the time they start their mobility.
European Health Insurance Card is also recommended.
The Doctoral and Graduate School (DGS) of the University of La Laguna (ULL) is interdisciplinary and encompasses all PhD and Master’s degree programmes in various fields of knowledge. It offers more than thirty programmes from the fields of Arts & Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social & Legal Sciences, and Engineering & Architecture.
Our official Master’s Courses are taught at the different campuses of the university. Foreign exchange students are free to choose courses from our official catalogue, provided there is a bilateral agreement signed between their university and ULL, and after consultation with the academic advisors at their home university.
More than twenty Doctoral Programmes are also offered by our university. Incoming PhD students are welcome to spend a research period at ULL, for which they have to apply under Erasmus Traineeship, as our programmes are not organized under the ECTS system.
Admission procedure
Master’s students
International Master’s students from partner universities are able to come to the ULL as part of an organised study exchange. In order to undergo an Erasmus+ study exchange period at the ULL, there must be a bilateral agreement in place between the corresponding departments of the partner institutions. To check whether an agreement with the ULL exists, please contact the person responsible for Erasmus+ at your home institution.
In order to apply for the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme at the University of La Laguna, the International Deputy Vice Chancellor’s office provides a complete guide & information.
If you wish to apply as a postgraduate student, please read and carefully follow the instructions provided by the Erasmus office.
Once nominated by the home university, postgraduate students should choose their courses from among our Master’s programmes in order to be accepted by the DGS. The courses catalog is available at this link.
Postgraduate students who cannot find a Master’s programme related to their field of interest may choose undergraduate courses from the last year of any degree (4th year). You can combine Bachelor Courses (4th year) and Master’s Courses in the Learning Agreement.
Erasmus+ international students cannot do external practice (“Prácticas Externas”) during their stay.
Master’s Thesis: Erasmus+ international students cannot be accepted to work on their Master’s Thesis (“Trabajo de Fin de Máster”) as a part of their stay. For those students who wish to spend a period of research at ULL it is mandatory to be nominated under Erasmus+ Traineeship.
Continuous assessment, based on course attendance, constitutes the main evaluation system/principle at ULL. A minimum of 80% course attendance is generally required.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Applicants must be aware that some Master’s Degrees are in high demand and have quotas of students that can be accepted. Thus, not all Erasmus applications can be admitted.
The DGS has to consult the academic committees of all Master’s Degrees every year in order to update the information regarding quotas.
Due to its particularities, the Master’s Degree in Marine Biology: Biodiversity and Conservation cannot accept Erasmus students.
Several other Master’s Degrees, such as the Master in Terrestrial Biodiversity and Conservation in Islands and the Master in General Health Psychology have specific requirements for acceptance of Erasmus students. Those who wish to apply for courses in those Master’s Degrees have to contact our International Mobility Coordinator (movipos@ull.edu.es) before filling their Learning Agreements.
General language skills and requirements for postgraduate students
Spanish is the language of instruction at the ULL. Most of our university services are also offered in Spanish. For this reason, international students should demonstrate a level of Spanish language proficiency, regardless of their nationality or country of residence. A minimum of B1 level of Spanish is required for the Erasmus+ international students.
Spanish courses for foreigners are offered by our Language Service, but they do not belong to any official programme and, therefore, will not be included in the student’s Transcript of Records. Please, notice that Spanish courses for foreigners should not be included in the Learning Agreement.
English language requirements for international students: The minimum level of English required for all ULL Master’s courses is B1. Most Master’s Degrees also have an English language requirement that may vary among programmes. The specific English language requirements are explained in each programme. We recommend to read them carefully.
PhD students
Doctoral students who wish to undergo a research period at the ULL should apply through the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme.
They should contact a lecturer from our university who agrees to supervise their stay here, sign the Learning Agreement and, upon arrival, manage the procedure so that the student can have access to our university’s facilities.
Students who need assistance to find a lecturer to supervise their research mobility can write to our International Mobility Coordinator (movipos@ull.edu.es), who can be of help by contacting the directors of our Doctoral Programmes.

Language requirements
Do I need to speak Spanish to study at ULL?
Yes. Spanish is the main language of instruction at ULL, and all of our university services are largely provided in Spanish. For this reason, you should be able to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish. A minimum of B1 Spanish is required, or higher (B2/C1/C2) if specified in the Inter-institutional Agreement.
Which Spanish certificates are accepted?
We accept official Spanish certificates from Instituto Cervantes (DELE / SIELE), as well as certificates issued by student’s home universities.
I have a B1 Spanish level but don't have a valid certificate, can I still be admitted as an Erasmus+ student?
International students without an official Spanish certificate (DELE / SIELE / certificates issued by their home university) will be required to pass a free 30-hour online course offered by ULL in order to be admitted.
Courses and Learning Agreement
Who is responsible for approving my Online Learning Agreement?
Your ULL departmental coordinator is the person responsible for reviewing and signing your Online Learning Agreement. You will be informed of the name and contact details of your assigned departmental coordinator during the admission process.
Will I be able to choose courses from a different semester to the one that I am going to take at ULL?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. The courses are offered either in the first (Autumn) or in the second (Spring) semester, some are full-year. You can only choose courses that are offered in the same semester as your mobility period. If you are coming for the whole academic year, you should choose courses from both semesters and/or annual courses. Your ULL departmental coordinator may assist you with your course selection.
Please check the course catalogue to find out which courses are available in the first or second semester, or for the full academic year.
Will I be able to choose courses from a different study field to the one that I have been nominated for?
Erasmus+ students are expected to take at least 50% of their courses within their nominated study field. The remaining courses may be selected from different degree programmes, but please note that some programmes may have additional restrictions. It is therefore recommended that you consult with your ULL departmental coordinator to confirm if this is possible.
Accommodation options
Where to stay in Tenerife?
Private housing
For those students who are looking for accommodation, there are several notices of apartments and shared flats on the notice boards in the different university campuses. This service is not provided by the Erasmus Office and therefore we are not able to carry out any procedures regarding private accommodation.
Erasmus Play
Erasmus Play is a student accommodation search engine, for students coming to Spanish universities. It allows you to compare all the available accommodation quickly and easily. Moreover, you will be able to book in total safety, since all accommodation are provided by verified platforms.
Special educational support needs
I have special educational support needs. What support services are available at ULL?
At ULL, we are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of their individual needs, have equal access to education. Our Programme of Attention to Students with Specific Educational Support Needs (PAED) offers a range of services to support students with disabilities (visual, hearing, physical, and mental) and/or specific educational support needs (SEN). During the admission process, please inform us if you require any special support, so we can ensure you receive the appropriate services.
Registration and enrolment
How do I register at ULL and get a Certificate of Arrival?
A Welcome Guide containing registration instructions will be sent to all accepted students. Please note that online registration is mandatory for all incoming students and your arrival boarding pass is required for this process.
Registration period:
- Autumn/First Semester: September – October
- Spring/Second semester: January – February
International students are advised to arrive at least one week before the start of their studies. A certificate of arrival will be sent after registration.
How do I enrol for the courses in my OLA?
All Erasmus students are required to enrol on the courses listed on their Online Learning Agreement (OLA) at the Faculty indicated on their Erasmus certificate, provided along with the letter of acceptance. A Welcome Guide with enrolment instructions will be sent to all admitted students.
Please note that any Changes to the OLA will not automatically be reflected in your enrolment, so you will need to the Faculty Administration to update your enrolment accordingly.
Do I need to make a tuition payment?
Erasmus+ students under the age of 28 are not required to pay any tuition fees other than the student insurance fee of €1.12. Once enrolled, students will receive a payment card from their ULL Faculty. Please note that courses will not be graded, and a Transcript of Records will not be issued unless the insurance fee is paid by the deadline using one of the payment methods listed on the payment card.
Erasmus+ students aged 28 and over are exempt from tuition fees, but must still enrol and will receive a payment card with an amount of €0.
What should I do if I have a problem with my enrolment or courses?
If you encounter any problems with your enrolment or course registration, contact the Faculty administration immediately. They will guide you through any necessary changes. If you need additional assistance, you can also reach out to your Departmental coordinator.
During mobility
What should I do if I get sick or need medical attention during my stay?
If you require medical attention, you can visit any nearby public health service. Please ensure you bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private insurance details, as these may be required for medical treatment.
How can I get in touch with other international students in Tenerife?
The non-governmental youth association AEGEE Tenerife has a Whatsapp group to contact other international students. They also organise the Buddy Programme, where you can be assigned a local student to help you adjust to university life at ULL.
End of mobility
How do I obtain a Certificate of Stay at the end of my mobility?
Once your mobility period has ended, you can request a Certificate of Stay from the International Relations Office. Instructions on how to obtain the document will be provided. Please note that you will need to submit your departure boarding pass in order to receive the certificate.
There is a problem with my Transcript of Records. Who should I contact?
