The Master's Degree in Religious Sciences: History and Society was born from the conviction that it is necessary to strengthen the regulated offer of academic studies on religions in Spanish public universities through an inter-university alliance, thus bringing us closer to the century-old and brilliant tradition of studies on religions in other countries.
The general objective of this Master's degree is to provide a high level of training in Religious Sciences to future researchers and professionals from different fields (teachers, politicians, administration technicians, diplomats, journalists, cultural managers, social workers, aid workers, etc.).
The Master's degree will offer training on religion as a cultural system and a theoretical and methodological apparatus for the analysis and understanding of the religious phenomenon. Special attention will be paid to the formation of a specific sensitivity for the analysis of the testimonies of each religion. This reflection will be linked to the historical development of the religious phenomenon, which is why special attention is given to religions in diachrony, the basis for the perception of their own transformations in conceptual, moral and liturgical terms, as opposed to the idea of the immobility of religious constructions.
The Master's degree also aims to provide the necessary training for managing diversity in multi-religious societies from the different spheres of state administration (local, regional and state), and from the development of public policies, especially with regard to legislation and educational foundations.
These are, therefore, two complementary and parallel itineraries, the first dedicated to the historical analysis of the religious phenomenon and the second to providing appropriate tools for those faced with the tasks of regulating or facilitating the coexistence of communities in a multi-religious society.
- The Master's Degree is aimed especially at people who are characterized by an interest in the cultural manifestations of societies throughout history and in the present. In general, the Master's Degree is aimed at graduates and diploma holders, both Spanish and foreign, from any branch of knowledge; priority will be given to graduates and diploma holders in Humanities, History, Law, Political Science, Philosophy, Philology, Sociology, Anthropology, History of Art, Information Sciences, Social Work.
- As for the skills considered desirable for taking the master's degree, there are no special requirements, beyond the usual ones for any university-type study: reading ability, a good disposition for analysis, synthesis and writing, and above all an interest in criticism and knowledge.
