Internships

The Practicum Module consists of 21 credits and includes the internship (15 credits) and the master's or degree final project (6 credits).

Internships (15 credits): With the advent of the EHEA, the methodological change of teaching aimed at achieving competences is consolidated. And since competences are linked to the field of action, to the adequate resolution of tasks in context, the specific competences linked to the profession of teacher of Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching, will be linked to the adequate performance of tasks in teaching contexts, and their development must inevitably be built by the active and reflective participation of the future teacher in a school.

Thus, the objective of the Internship is the professional development of teachers and the acquisition of general and disciplinary teaching skills, referring to the reference knowledge specific to their specialization.

On the other hand, the Internships aim to develop skills related to the professional knowledge of the specialty, those of the educational institution, and in professional centers also those linked to knowing the business typology of the different productive sectors.

The internships must provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills related to acquiring experience in planning teaching and assessing the subjects corresponding to their specialization, to demonstrate a good command of oral and written expression in teaching practice, to master the social skills and abilities necessary to foster a climate that facilitates learning and coexistence, and to participate in proposals for improvement in the different areas of expansion based on reflection based on practice.

Requirements for carrying out External Internships

The following requirements will be met for students to carry out external internships:

a) Be enrolled in the university course to which the basic, generic and/or specific skills to be acquired by the student in carrying out the internship are linked.

b) In the case of curricular external internships, be enrolled in the related subject, according to the Study Plan in question.

c) Not maintain any contractual relationship with the company, institution or entity.

Choice of internship places by students

The coordinators will make public the list of available centres in advance so that students can choose by preference. In the event of a tie or disagreement regarding the choice/distribution of centres, the students' admission grades for the master's degree will be used.

The internships will have 15 credits and will consist of 12 credits of presence in the educational centers and 3 credits of the Teacher Skills Workshop where the future teacher will simulate and apply in this workshop situations in which it is necessary to demonstrate the acquisition of skills related to dialogue, medication, oral competence, conflict management and other multiple situations that arise in the classroom and in the center and for which he or she must be sufficiently prepared.

Regarding the specialty of Educational Guidance, the internships consist of 15 credits and aim to train students in psychopedagogical assessment, counseling other education professionals, students and families. These internships will be carried out in the Guidance Departments.

The External Internships will be provided with a management structure that is specified in a collaboration agreement with the Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Education of the Government of the Canary Islands. It is this Department that undertakes to offer the educational centres necessary to carry out such internships.

In addition, the figures of a center coordinator involved in transmitting the structural and operational idiosyncrasy of the center, and a tutor will be provided. On the part of the Universities, the figure of the academic tutor is contemplated, who will have to coordinate with the professionals of the Educational Center.

The training activities to be carried out include: preparation and follow-up seminars, integration and intervention practices, and evaluation activities.

The Department of Education, Universities and Sustainability makes available to the Universities that have signed Collaboration Agreements, the Network of Secondary Education centers for the development of internships for their postgraduate degrees.

Resolution of October 27, 2020, which orders the publication of the Educational Cooperation Agreement between the Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports and the University of La Laguna for the completion of external academic internships by students of official bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of La Laguna in teaching centres in the Canary Islands supported with public funds.

At the University of La Laguna, external internships are governed by the Regulations for the Management of External Internships for Students of the University of La Laguna. They also follow the procedure established by the Faculty of Education in its Internal Quality Assurance System for this purpose.
