Master's Degree in Theory and History of Art and Cultural Management

The Master's Degree in Theory and History of Art and Cultural Management is intended to provide professional and research-based training in Theory and History of Art and Cultural Management to graduates and graduates in arts and humanities oriented towards research or cultural management.

General information

  • Note: In order to achieve these objectives, courses have been programmed that offer a varied perspective of heritage subjects of academic and professional interest. Some courses delve into the analysis of problems related to the institutional management of heritage, and others offer up-to-date training in legal aspects and the application of instruments for the protection of assets that make up the heritage.
  • Provide theoretical knowledge, as well as technical skills and tools to act in professional processes related to Cultural and Heritage Management, in accordance with international guidelines on the matter
  • Note: To achieve these objectives, a block of theoretical subjects is programmed consisting of advanced studies in the theory of visual and audiovisual arts, architecture and music.
  • Introduce students to the lines of specialized research defined in the degree catalog
  • Complement the academic training aimed at the professional application of the theoretical knowledge of the discipline acquired in the Bachelor's degree
The admission profile for the Master's Degree in Theory and History of Art and Cultural Management is aimed primarily at graduates in Art History, Music Sciences, Philosophy, Philology and Fine Arts. It is also offered to other graduates in related areas, such as social sciences: Graduates or Graduates in Journalism, Pedagogy, Economics, or Information Sciences. Likewise for related degrees such as Architecture. Consequently, the admission profiles will be:
  • Graduates or Licentiates in Art History, Humanities, Fine Arts, Architecture, Higher Conservatory Degree, Licentiate or Degree in History and Sciences of Music and Musical Teaching. Higher graduates in Dramatic Arts. Also, degrees related to pedagogy and communication.
  • Graduates from foreign universities with qualifications that are considered equivalent to those indicated in the previous point
  • Future graduates with training equivalent to any of the aforementioned degrees
  • Students from the EU or other countries of the EHEA, as well as from other places in the world, must provide an equivalent degree of the indicated qualifications, approved or homologable, complying with the regulations in force at the ULL in this regard.
  • The professional specialization in Art History and Cultural Management requires students to be familiar with current art and its evaluation, with the debates surrounding museology, museography and cultural mediation. It also requires mastery of the skills of collective work, written and oral expression skills, as well as a basic command of at least one of the European languages, at least English. It is also an additional guarantee for interested students to have previous experience in the field in one of the activities planned among the practical concepts.

  • Graduates who have chosen the research option Research Methodologies in Theory and History of Art will be trained in writing about art history, and particularly in the dissemination of the arts through the analysis of texts from different currents, the realization of writing practices, their transfer in editorial products and, eventually, their dissemination in the media.
  • Those who have chosen the professional option of Cultural Management will be specialized in tasks in the sector of curating, art criticism and cultural management, in its varied demand for experts in documentary making, inventory and cataloging, collection diagnosis, appraisals, technical reports, etc.
