Political uses of the poster
the projection of a touristic identity for Asturias
Abstract
Since its origin linked to the development of the consumer society, the poster has imposed itself as a powerful tool for the transmission of certain ideas, which can serve the interests of some organizations depending on the historical moment. This article analyzes the posters for the tourist promotion of Asturias commissioned by two institutions framed in dictatorial regimes in the early twentieth century: the National Tourist Board and the Directorate General of Tourism. From their iconographic reading, different representations are extracted through which it was intended to implant a bucolic and picturesque conception of the Asturian region, transmitting at the same time certain ideological and political values to build a new perception of it by the promoting institutions.
