Abstract

Jeronimo Gomez is a sculptor whose artistic production has been built in pieces and sometimes seen obliquely by historiography, in part due to the destruction of his possible work preserved in the province of Malaga during anticlerical riots of 1931 and 1936 that deprived us of knowing his documented artistic corpus or whatever remains to be documented (due to the disappearance of the parish archives) and also for the discreet quality displayed by the pieces that have been assigned to him over time, which speak to us of a correct sculptor in the technique, robust in forms but lacking sufficient expressive force. Even so, at the time this author and his workshop had a good reputation in the city, the province and beyond, with a stable clientele and enjoying civil and ecclesiastical institutional favor.

In this article we will make a compilation of all his documented and assigned work up to the current date in order to serve as a small catalog of the author and his workshop, as well as discover unpublished works that, due to their geographical location far from the main focus from which they must have come The vast majority of pieces from the aforementioned workshop – that is, Malaga – have not been taken into account as probable works carried out by him.
