Ilustraremos nuestro propósito a través de dos obras que se corresponden con dos momentos clave dentro del desarrollo de la narración en Francia, en las que nos proponemos identificar una suerte de geografía simbólica. La primera de ellas es <em>El</em> <em>cuento</em> <em>del</em> <em>Grial</em>, escrita por Chrétien de Troyes a finales del siglo xii, en la cual un héroe, encerrado en una tierra aislada –baldía–, emprende una búsqueda en cuyo transcurso no parece capaz de liberarse de los efectos negativos de dicho espacio, hasta finalmente encontrarse con el rostro benéfico y reparador de este. En un segundo momento nos desplazaremos al siglo xvi, para centrarnos en Rabelais y en la acción fundadora de sus héroes, mostrada a través de su diálogo con la tierra a la que el gigante rescata de su esterilidad.
