Abstract

«Pioneering work and collegial exclusion: women in the genesis of German experimental psychology». Th is article examines the role of gender as a determining factor for academic merit. Th e study is based on a case analysis. It studies the working conditions and the possibilities of academic integration for the fi rst generation of women participating in the development of German experimental psychology at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. I shall fi rstly describe how the new discipline with its psychological laboratories emerged. Secondly, I shall present the intellectual biographies of the pioneer women in experimental psychology. Finally, I shall analyse the «gender paradox» consisting in being able to carry out pioneer work in the psychological laboratories and simultaneously becoming the object of collegial exclusion.
