La Gramática de la lengua tupí de José de Anchieta y su dependencia de la gramática latina

Resumen

The dependency on the Latin Grammar of the Tupi Language or Arte de grammatica da Lingoa mais vsada na costa do Brasil, which was first described by the jesuist Father José de Anchieta from La Laguna (Tenerife), is due at least to these four facts: 1. The author himself who wrote in Latin and taught this language as well; 2. The recipients of his works, the jesuists, his brothers in religion who were great connoisseurs of the Latin language and who had been educated in it; 3. The model set by the first description of the romance language (Nebrija, Oliveira, de Barros) based as they were on the above mentioned grammar; 4. The Latin Grammar itself, which was considered to be a universal model of linguistic codification. The extent to which Tupi differs from Latin, -quatenus a latina differt-, will however allow Anchieta to analyse and describe the pecularities of that Indian language.
