What is Talent Volcano?

It is a program for developing projects based on promising and original ideas that contribute to the comprehensive recovery of La Palma following the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption.

Who is driving it?

The University of La Laguna and Banco Santander (Santander Scholarships), the latter as the funder, with the collaboration of La Laguna institutions and all organizations that join the work process.

What does it consist of?

The Program aims to attract talent and contribute knowledge to the process of material reconstruction and economic and social recovery on the island of La Palma following the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption. To this end, it encourages the submission of promising ideas that can be transformed into feasible projects in the short and medium term. Participants must present an idea in the form of a proposal and develop it into a project during the Program. Qualified support and specific training will be provided throughout the process. The work will conclude with a public presentation of the completed projects.

What other activities will I have to do?

The program involves up to 50 hours of training accredited by the University of La Laguna (20 hours of mandatory training in its initial phase), plus various group and collective work sessions before the results presentation sessions, scheduled for its conclusion. Participants will also be available to provide individual, group, and collective follow-up tutoring as part of the mentoring process. Participants may request accreditation for other activities and training courses, up to a maximum of 20 additional hours.

Who can participate?

Graduates of the University of La Laguna from the academic years 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

What profiles, disciplines, or areas of knowledge can participate?

All. Graduates of the University of La Laguna's degrees in Arts and Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Law, and Engineering and Architecture are eligible to participate. Those who have completed University of La Laguna's own degrees and official master's degrees in the last four academic years are also eligible to participate.

How many people will participate?

35 people. A reserve list will be established to cover vacancies during the first months of the Program's development.

Will there be any preference regarding the participants?

Participation will be rewarded with points for graduates residing in La Palma, specifically in the Aridane Valley, as well as for those who can prove they were affected by or displaced by the volcano.

What is its duration?

Six months with a formal link.

When does it start?

The Program, in its current form, began on July 1, 2022, and will end on April 30, 2023, with the two calls for proposals falling within that timeframe.

How do you access it?

By submitting an individual application by completing a "Proposal Report" and submitting various documents electronically, according to the guidelines of the call for applications in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC). Only one proposal per participant will be accepted.

What is the incentive being offered?

10,000 euros, to be delivered in two installments, the first of 4,000 euros at the start of the Program after the scholarship is accepted.

What support will be available?

Participants will have the support and guidance of a professional team working in La Palma, managed through the Canary Islands General Foundation of the University of La Laguna.

Is it compatible with other activities?

Yes, provided the Program objectives are met, the participants participate in the planned activities and exceed the established milestones, and they also attend the established training, mentoring, and follow-up meetings. Failure to comply with the commitment will result in the loss of participant status and the resulting effects on the allocated resources.

What can I do if I want to participate?

Several things. First, I need to reflect on and research the promising idea I would like to present in order to work on it during the development of the Program, so that it can become a coherent and viable project that contributes to the reconstruction process on the island of La Palma. Second, I need to identify potential individuals, groups, or university structures at the University of La Laguna that might welcome and endorse this idea, committing to accompany us throughout the process. Third, I need to identify potential individuals, entities, companies, or institutions in La Palma that might also welcome and endorse this idea, committing to accompany us throughout the work process.

Where can I find more information about the Program?

Can I find information that will guide me toward promising ideas?

Yes, we can initially share some references related to the process of material reconstruction and socioeconomic recovery on the island of La Palma, in which the University itself has been involved.

First, you can check out the results of the social audition conducted with the citizens of the Aridane Valley as part of the "Revive the Valley" project.

It is also appropriate to reflect on the main issues that have been identified in the participatory process currently underway on the island of La Palma related to the effects and implications of the volcanic eruption at Cumbre Vieja. They can be found in the Appendix I to this document.

You can also consider the guidelines of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals and the Canary Islands Agenda 2030.
